In memory of Philomena Pichler (1947-2026)

"The forest suggests listening".

Hermann Hesse

Characteristics and CV

The Austrian painter was born in St. Johann in Tirol in 1947 and has lived and worked in Vienna for over 20 years. She was awarded the Kölner Stadtanzeiger recognition prize back in 1964. The autodidact and lateral thinker studied under Prof. Opperer and Prof. Otte (Salzburg) and Prof. Gerald Nitsche (Innsbruck). Three semesters of lithography & lithographic printing with Mag. Doz. Wojtek Krzywoblocki, Mag. Lebzelter and Mag. Dr. Kodera (Vienna) completed her training.

Pichler's work is impressive due to her pioneering approach to sustainability in art. She is a master of the sensitive handling of already used materials and "created" art. An absolutely innovative, exemplary approach to creating sustainable "valuable" things with art. Object art became an important element of her oeuvre. Abstraction and figuration complement each other and form a harmonious whole. The color focus is on yellow, red, blue, white and black. Numerous exhibitions in Austria, Germany, Italy, Hungary and the USA.

Why BURN-IN

The interlinking of business and art and the topic of sustainability have shaped the artist from the very beginning. The Picture Forest project, which Pichler launched in 2002, bore the concept title Pole Pictures and won over the Institute for Ecology, Technology and Innovation ÖTI with the idea of metamorphosing functional, scissorless cardboard rolls into imposing, valuable tree ensembles. In the meantime, the forest of pictures has grown to an impressive 500 trees and is mostly found in the interior area. At the Garden Show of the City of Vienna in Hirschstetten, the artist presented the Picture Forest outdoors for the first time and received a great deal of applause.

It's fitting that BURN-IN focuses on sustainability and CSR. Back in April 2014, BURN-IN presented more than 50 works in the exhibition "Transparency and Sustainability" and was involved in the Social Business Day on the topic of resilience at the Vienna Künstlerhaus.

Pichler's forest of images is thus perfectly integrated into the BURN-IN portfolio and her recycled art testifies to the aesthetics of the discarded. The interweaving of art and sustainability thus succeeds in a very authentic way and provides additional spark.

In the BURN-IN exhibition Bilderwald | March 2018, the gallery is showing 30 ensembles, each consisting of 3-5 trees, and the artworks Kugelwald and Amorpher Wald.

ALBERTA'S ART-FEATURE &
BURN-IN Exhibition

"With her pole pictures, which form a "garden" whether outdoors or in closed rooms, Philomena Pichler once again takes a step towards object art, although she remains true to herself as a painter, using existing pictures for this purpose.

Her "flowers and trees" growing out of the ground are bursting with vitality and joy; they are the colorful, diverse, detailed nature from which Philomena Pichler draws her inspiration. The fine, often amusing details of the individual object come together in the group to form a harmonious but lively ensemble: you never tire of looking."
